DNB ORTHOPAEDICS
Department of Orthopedics is recognized by National Board of Examinations for post-graduate training in orthopedics from January 2008. Department is equipped with all facilities for training the candidates.
The Department has a structured teaching schedule and staff pattern required for such a training programme. The Department treats about 150 out-patients every day. All types of orthopedic patients are examined and investigated appropriately.
Specialty clinics like pediatric orthopedic clinic, fracture clinic, arthritis clinic, ilizarov and deformity clinic and spine clinics are also conducted regularly. The concerned specialists would head such clinics with trainees assisting in examination and planning the treatment.
The department has an intake of 2 candidates for DNB training in every academic year commencing in January. Candidates should have passed MBBS and Central Entrance Test conducted by NBE. The NBE holds the examination twice a year in January and July.
Department is staffed with three full-time, in-house, senior consultants. Reputed senior consultants both from India and abroad also visit the department. During the first year of training, the candidate will be trained in the areas of basic skills of patient care, documentation of the history and physical findings, evaluation of the patient, pre and post-operative care of orthopedic in-patients. They will also participate in ward rounds with senior doctors and attend to emergency calls and duties along with a senior trainee/consultant.
The trainees are allowed to assist and observe all the orthopedic operations on a turn basis. The second year of training mainly covers all the above and added responsibilities of patient care. Trainees would involve themselves actively in examining the outpatients, attend and assist in specialty clinics, participate in pre-op meetings, trauma meetings and are entrusted with the job of performing basic orthopedic surgeries under supervision.
Academic activities would involve case presentation and discussion, subject seminar presentation, journal club meetings and preparation scientific articles under the supervision of a senior consultant for presentation in major orthopedic meetings and publications.
The trainees would also be given postings in neurosurgery, plastic surgery in accordance with the requirements of training.
During the final year, the DNB candidates are expected to perform basic orthopedic procedures independently, under the supervision of a specialist and would be able to evaluate and assist actively in specialized areas of orthopedic surgeries. Academic activities include all the above plus the candidates are required to write their dissertation work according to the scientific basis and submit the thesis 6 months in advance of the completion of training period.
Examination oriented preparations are given a preference during this year of training. Thus, the candidate would have an overall training in orthopedic specialty and is expected to be well prepared to take the examination at the end of his training period.
