Click here for detailsThe department of Urology was inaugurated by Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, the honourable President of India in the presence of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, on 22nd November, 1992.
The department has three fully equipped operation theaters, a seven-bedded Urology ICU and a 60-bedded ward. It has facilities for Open Urological surgery, Endo-Urology, PCNL and Laproscopy.
Urology OPD functions from 8:30 AM till around 2 PM on all working days between Monday and Saturday. Urology OT functions from 8 AM till around 5 PM, on all working days between Monday and Saturday. Surgeries are performed in three dedicated Urology operation theatres.
Super specialty training in the field of Urology leading to the conferring of DNB (Urology) was started in the year 1994. Two candidates are admitted every year, selected by the National Board of Examinations and at a given time, we have six DNB Residents working and learning full time in the department. There is a well-established daily teaching schedule for these DNB Residents. Nearly 40 candidates have been trained so far in the department and 6 are being trained currently. We have had a 100% passing rate of DNB Residents in the last several years.
120-160 patients attend the Urology OPD every day. About 40-50 beds are occupied in the Urology ward throughout the year and about 10-12 major Urological surgeries are performed every day.
The administrative wing of the department is headed by the HOD and assisted by a Senior Manager.
SERVICES
The department provides the following Urological services.
- Simple & complex Open Urological surgeries.
- Upper and lower tract Endo-Urologic procedures.
- Laparoscopic Urological surgeries.
- Female Urology.
- Paediatric Urology.
- Urodynamic studies.
Urology OPD functions from 8:30 AM till all the OPD patients are seen – normally around 3-4PM, on all working days between Monday and Saturday.
Urology OT functions from 8 AM till all the surgeries posted for day are completed – normally around 4-5 PM, on all working days between Monday and Saturday. Surgeries are performed six days a week in three dedicated Urology operation theaters.
ACADEMICS
- Seminars and case discussions/ presentations are made by DNB Residents to the Consultants between 6pm and 7pm every Wednesday and Saturday.
- Didactic lectures and academic discussions via teleconferencing are held in collaboration with NU Hospitals, Bangalore, and Vedanayagam Hospital, Coimbatore, every Thursday.
Infrastructure / Equipment
- The department has three fully equipped operation theatres, a seven-bedded Urology PACU (Post Anaesthesia Care Unit) and a 66-bedded ward.
- The OPD is equipped with 6 Consultant rooms, 2 Treatment rooms, 1 recovery bed, UFR and UDS system.
- The OT is equipped with the latest instruments from reputed manufacturers such as Karl Storz, Richard Wolf and Olympus for Open Urology, Endo Urology including RIRS and Laparoscopic Urology.
- The department is equipped with Internet connectivity to facilitate teleconferencing with Urology Consultants around the globe.
- Latest national and international journals are made available online to the department.
