Gastroenterology is the medical specialty that includes the preservation, investigation and the restoration of the form and function of disorders of the digestive system by medical and non-surgical methods.

The purpose of the Gastroenterology Department at the SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram, and Sri Sathya General Hospital (SSSGH), Prasanthi Nilayam is to provide and ensure the delivery of FREE medical care to all patients with gastrointestinal diseases in the out-patient and in-patient setting.

The aim of the Gastroenterology unit is to promote up-to-date safe endoscopy care to all in need and facilitate education in gastrointestinal diseases and management.

Facilities and Services

Endoscopy Services: Currently, basic Endoscopy services are being provided at the unit.

Diagnostic Services:

  • Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
    • Direct visualization
    • Biopsy
  • Lower Endoscopy (Colonoscopy)
    • Direct visualization
    • Biopsy

Therapeutic Services at the time of Endoscopy:

  • Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
    • Injection therapy (including injection sclerotherapy) to control bleeding from varices, ulcers, etc.
    • Endoclip therapy to control bleeding from ulcers, etc.
    • Banding therapy to control bleeding from varices.
    • Dilatation of esophagus.
    • Argon Photo Coagulation (APC)
  • Lower Endoscopy (Colonoscopy)
    • Polypectomy
    • Injection therapy (including injection sclerotherapy) to control bleeding from mucosal lesions including A-V malformations, polypectomy sites, etc.
    • Endoclip therapy to control bleeding from mucosal lesions including A-V malformations, polypectomy sites, etc.
    • Argon Photo Coagulation (APC)

Specific endoscopy procedures currently being provided (for out-patients and in-patients):

We are currently providing both Upper Endoscopy (EGD) and Lower Endoscopy (Colonoscopy) procedures on a regular basis. During endoscopy, we have been able to provide specific testing and therapeutic modalities. These include the following:

  • Testing for Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) infection, a common cause for inflammation and ulcers in stomach and small intestine
  • Tissue biopsies to diagnose specific diseases
  • Variceal banding (to treat and/or prevent further bleeding from esophageal varices)
  • Hemorrhoidal banding (to treat bleeding hemorrhoids)
  • Polypectomy (removal of potentially pre-cancerous polyps)
  • Palliative ablation of cancers obstructing the gastrointestinal tract by Argon photocoagulation (APC) technique.

In addition to providing endoscopy service for out-patients, we are providing endoscopy services for in-patients at both SSSIHMS and SSSGH in Puttaparthi.

Out-Patient Consultation Services

The Gastroenterology Unit has an out-patient department at the SSSGH in Puttaparthi and patients are seen every morning from Monday to Saturday. The facility began on 14th July, 2008.

Types of diseases currently being seen in the OPD clinic: Gastrointestinal (majority), Hepatic and Hepato-Pancreatico-biliary diseases.

  • Gastrointestinal: Common diseases being seen include chronic abdominal pain due to peptic ulcer disease, upper GI cancers, esophageal varices, chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hemorrhoid bleeding and colon cancer.
  • Hepatic: Common diseases being seen include cirrhosis with ascites, unexplained elevations of liver tests, hepatitis B.
  • Hepato-Pancreatico-biliary: Common diseases being seen include gallstone disease, pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer.

Patients are requested to visit the Sri Sathya Sai General Hospital, Puttaparthi for screening and registration and visit Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram only after they are asked to do so.

In-Patient Consultation Services

Additionally, the department is providing in-patient consultations for various Gastrointestinal diseases both at SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram and at SSSGH.

Education and Training

One of the important goals of the Gastroenterology Unit at SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram, is to provide adequate education and/or training in the following areas:

  • Patient education on a variety of gastrointestinal (includes liver) disease through educational brochures, one-on-one consultations, etc. To date, a total of 23 educational brochures have been developed including brochures on Endoscopy procedures and various Gastrointestinal (including Liver) diseases.
  • Education of Nurses and Technicians will be provided by visiting doctors and nurses who are qualified educators in their fields.
  • Education of Doctors in gastrointestinal Liver diseases will be done through ongoing CME activities at the SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram.
