The Department of Cardiology began functioning in the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences (SSSIHMS), Prasanthigram on November 22, 1991. With complex procedures being performed free of cost, patients visit the Department from all over the country.
Patients mostly belong to economically weaker sections of the society, who could not have afforded the cost of the treatment elsewhere.
Infrastructure and Equipment
The department offers all forms of non-invasive and invasive care and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
The non-invasive cardiac setup includes 3-channel ECG, Stress ECG, Holter, late potential vector anaalysis echocardiography, pacemaker analysis, stress echocardiography, 3-dimensional echocardiography and tissue doppler. The department employs a comprehensive imaging solution, the Picture Archival and Communication System (PACS) to capture, transmit and archive radiological, angiographic and echocardiogram images. These images can be accessed by doctors across the Cardiology and CTVS departments in the hospital.
The invasive cardiac setup has 2 fully-equipped top-of-the-line flat panel cath labs with hemodynamic recorders. The 16 bedded Critical Care Unit (CCU) is equipped with high-end patient monitors networked with a central station, ventilators, infusion pumps, ECG and echo machines, defibrillators, portable X-Ray and imaging units.
Other facilities include a departmental library with books on various aspects of cardiology. An angiography film library and a lecture hall cum conference room, with slide projector, overhead projector and computer with power point presentation facilities. There is facility of broadband internet connection at various locations for students.

Distinguished Visiting Faculty
1. Dr. Alan H. Gradman, M.D is currently Professor of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is a world-renowned figure in the field of clinical cardiology. He received his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Following his internship and residency at Barnes Hospital, he completed his postdoctoral fellowship in cardiology at Stanford University Medical School. After finishing his training he spent 13 years on the faculty at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Gradman has authored numerous publications dealing with various aspects of clinical cardiology and cardiovascular pharmacotherapy and is a manuscript reviewer for several major journals.
2. Dr. Brahma Sharma, M.D F.A.C.C is a Clinical Associate Professor at University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre since 1990. After completing his medical training at The University of Alabama, Dr. Sharma pursued his fellowship at The University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Sharma is an active member of the Association of American Physicians from India (AAPI), and has served as AAPI convention chair for international association, secretary of AAPI charitable foundation and secretary of TRI state Physician association.
3. Dr. P Syamasundar Rao, M.D is currently Professor and Division Director, Department of Pediatric Cardiology, University of Texas-Houston Medical School. With an illustrious career spanning close to 5 decades in clinical cardiology, innumerable international publications, monographs and book chapters to his credit he is a luminary in the field of pediatric intervention.
