LABORATORY SERVICES
New fully automated ELISA work station inaugurated
The lab has a team of dedicated and fully qualified and trained personnel who work on state-of-the-art equipment. They are fully trained to correlate the results with clinical information thus ensuring optimum benefit to the patients.
All the sections are enrolled in regular Internal and External Quality Programmes.
From time to time, newer tests are incorporated to meet the needs of the patients from different departments. The latest state–of-the-art equipments are available.
The laboratories provide services round the clock.
The lab is totally computerized. All requests are placed on-line and the results are made available on the computer.
At present, the lab caters to the out-patients and in-patients of the different departments in the premises, and, to its sister institutions, Sri Sathya Sai Mobile Hospital and Sri Sathya Sai General Hospital.
Hematology
Routine: Hematology includes routine tests like all Hb%, WBC, DLC, Plt counts: – all these are done by analyzers (a five part and a backup three part differential counters).Peripheral smears are made and stained and screened in all abnormal cases by the pathologist. ESR is done on a semiautomated analyzer.
Special tests: Typing of anemias is done in all necessary cases. Special tests like Reticulocyte count and test for sickling are done wherever necessary.
Hemoparasites: Malarial parasite and Microfilaria are screened by the QBC method using the Fluorescent technique.
Coagulation profile: Prothrombin time/INR and APTT are done in a semi automated analyzer. Bleeding time are done routinely in all pre-op cases.
Clinical Pathology
Routine: Each test in Clinical Pathology involves a 4 (sometimes 8 )parameter strip test and spun deposit in the microscope.
Special tests for Bile pigments, B-J proteins, Hemoglobinuria and Myoglobinuria.
Fluid analysis (all body fluids – pleural, pericardial, synovial, CSF, peritoneal). High quality microscopes including a Phase contrast Polarising and Fluorescent facilities are available along with cytocentrifuge. Fluid analysis including screening for malignant cells & synovial fluid for crystals.
Semen analysis
Fecal analysis including occult blood
Anatomical Pathology
Routine: Specimens range from wedge biopsies to radical nephrectomies and radical cystectomies, TURP, TURBT, and lymph nodes, breast lumps etc. Both oncologic and non-oncologic specimens are reported routinely.
Special: Stains like Z-N, GMS, PAS.
The department of Immunohistochemistry has started functioning since 2008.
From the time of its inception on November 12th, 1991, the Department of Microbiology has grown rapidly. The hospital microbiology department encompasses routine diagnostic microbiology divisions namely Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Serology and Surveillance.
Bacteriology/Mycobateriology/Mycology
Recently this section has been upgraded with BACT/ALERT-3D (Automated continuous monitoring blood culture system) and VITEK-2 (A fully automated Bacterial Identification and Antimicrobial susceptibility system). Special staining procedures Zeihl-Neelsen-(Z-N), Auramine-Rhodamine (A-R) method (fluorescent technique). Culture and isolation of fungus from various clinical specimens is done here including corneal scrapings is done by calcoflour white staining technique.
Serology
The special serological tests for detection for HBs Ag, Anti HIV-1/HIV-2 antibodies, Anti HCV antibodies by ELISA method,( testing done fully automated EVOLIS machine.
Simple serological tests, like ASO, CRP, RA, WIDAL for enteric fever, RPR for Syphilis,Dengue.
Surveillance/Hospital Acquired Infection
As part of surveillance, antibiograms are generated. Surveillance of Operation Theatre complexes is done. Water analysis of different water sources of our hospital and sister Institutes. Surveillance of autoclaves and ethylene oxide (ETO) gas. Preoperative screening of nasal swabs for MRSA from patients has also been introduced.
HAI – Infections, trends, prevention protocols are discussed and action plans formulated.
The laboratory analyses about 200 samples a day & the average number of tests is about 1000 a day.
This includes routine chemistry, hormones & tumor markers. The lab is equipped with fully automated analyzers AU 400 and EM 200, Cobas e411, Osmotat 3000 and D10.
- Routine chemistry tests like Liver function tests, Renal function tests, electrolytes, Special enzymes like Amylase , LDH , CPK and special protein tests, CRPhs & microproteins are done on AU400 and EM200.
- Thyroid tests, tumor markers and cardiac marker, Troponin are done on Cobas e411.
- D10 analyzer is exclusive for testing HbA1C. Besides Blood samples, Urine samples, Fluids (Peritoneal, Pericardial, Pleural, CSF) are routinely done.
