OPHTHALMOLOGY

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The department of ophthalmology began functioning on 23 of November 1994 with the blessings of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The department was set up with the vision to make available the finest in eye care in the world to its patients totally free of cost. The department has a modern operation theatre complex with three operation theatres, an advanced laser unit and other various other state of the art equipment for delivering quality patient care. 

FACILITIES AND SERVICES

ROUTINE REFRACTIVE ERRORS

  • Screening and examination of refractive errors is performed and suitable glasses are prescribed.

RETINA

    • Medical retina : Screening , laser treatment , intravitreal injections for diabetic retinopathy/retinal vein occlusions/ age related macular degeneration
    • Surgical retina :
    1. Retinal detachment surgery
    2. Diabetic vitrectomies
    3. Macular surgeries (ERM, Macular hole, VMT)
    4. Intraocular foreign body removal
    5. E) Endophthalmitis

GLAUCOMA

Diagnosis, medical / surgical management of primary and secondary glaucomas.

Facilities offered are:

  • Humphrey visual field testing
  • Laser peripheral iridotomy
  • Selective laser trabeculoplasty
  • Trabeculectomy
  • Combined cataract and trabeculectomy surgery
  • Glaucoma drainage device   

CATARACTS

    • Senile cataract
    • Traumatic cataract
    • Complicated cataract
    • Subluxated and dislocated lens
    • Pediatric cataract
    • Secondary intraocular lens implantation

    Surgeries offered are Small incision cataract surgery(SICS)and Phacoemulsification based on the case merit and surgeon preference . Rigid or foldable intraocular lens is placed depending on the procedure performed.

    ANTERIOR SEGMENT

    Diagnosis and management of:

    • Infections and inflammatory conditions of conjunctiva and cornea
    • Conjunctival / corneal trauma

     

     

     

     

    Neuro-ophthalmology

    Complete Neuroimaging facility at SSSIHMS, Prashanthigram, like CT and MRI scanning facilities are available.

    Some patients who need further evaluation are sent to SSSIHMS, Whitefield.

     

     

    OCULOPLASTY

    Management of diseases related to the eyelids , orbit , ocular surface , lacrimal system.

    • Surgery for watery eyes – DCR
    • Surgery for droopy eyelids
    • Entropion / ectropion surgery
    • Orbitotomy
    • Thyroid eye disease management
    • Socket surgeries

     

    PAEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY AND STRABISMUS

    • Congenital cataract surgery
    • Strabismus evaluation and management(surgical and non-surgical)

     

    Facilities not available :

    • Refractive surgery
    • Corneal transplantation


    The selection of cases for surgery depends upon the visual prognosis effects at the time of screening. 

    • Number of beds in the wards : 42
    • Number of beds in ICU : 05

    • Average number of surgeries per day: 12

    • Average number of surgeries per month: 300

    The department has visiting surgeons from abroad in the fields of squint and vitreo-retinal surgeries.

    PATIENT CARE

    For inpatients, medicines, nursing care and diet is given free of cost during their stay. The patient is admitted one day prior to and discharged on the day after surgery after being explained post-operative care and medications.
